What is Breakthrough in the Bible?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines breakthrough as an act or instance of moving through or beyond an obstacle.  While you won’t find an actual definition of breakthrough in the Bible there are many stories that are aligned with the dictionary description.

One story in particular that comes to mind is when Elisha prayed that his servant’s eyes would be opened.  He not only asked God to open this man’s eyes but to let him see that they, with God’s angels, far outnumbered their enemy. (2 Kings 6:17).  Being able to see what only God can show you is certainly a breakthrough.

While God will always provide what we need, He may not provide everything we want. But whether it is a need or a want, one fact remains…prayer is key.  Not only is it key, but prayer is powerful.  I would even take these statements a step further and say that prayer is the answer to every problem in life.

Now, you may be thinking, prayer isn’t going to pay my bills or give me a job or fix my marriage. But it is the single foundational action we must take as we wait for God’s provision.  Prayer opens our heart to what God wants us to have and makes way for Him to deliver it to us in the way that He sees fit.

Prayer is the answer to every problem in life.

Prayers for Favour and Breakthrough

Sometimes our prayers don’t come as easily as we would like. We become tired and frustrated as we seek and wait on God to come through. I have learned that using scripture in prayer is key to breaking up the monotony of our dialogue with our Savior.

Throughout the Bible we find numerous scriptures that we can include in our prayer time.  But the book of Psalms is a great place to find prayers and praise.  Using Psalms for favour and breakthrough is helpful when you don’t always have the strength to muster up your own words.

Prayer for Financial Breakthrough

Money or lack thereof can create much stress in our lives.  Obviously, we need money to live, yet sometimes it seems as if it doesn’t stretch quite as far as we’d like.

Can you recall a time when you had a major unexpected expense such as a clothes dryer that suddenly stopped working?  Then you turn around and need to replace another major appliance like your water heater. Or, learn that your car needs a major repair.

I have certainly experienced a myriad of things breaking one after another.  How’s that saying go?  When it rains it pours.  In which case, the only thing pouring seems to be the money out of your pockets.

But God provided for me each and every time.

Prayer

Father God, You are Jehovah-Jireh!  We know that both riches and honor come from You, and we thank you for supplying all of our needs.  Help us to not look at our financial lack but instead remain focused on what You have already provided.  Your grace which is an undeserved gift.  Your mercies which are new every morning.  Your love which is wider, higher, deeper, and greater than we can ever comprehend.  Guide us in stewarding the money that You have already provided in the way that is pleasing to You.  We wait expectantly for You to rain down on us with financial treasures that will free us of our debts.  Turn around our circumstances so that we will become the lender instead of the borrower.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

2 Chronicles 29:12; Philippians 4:19; Ephesians 3: 18-19; Deuteronomy 28:12

Prayer for Marital Breakthrough

Marriage is a covenant created and ordained by God.  It is one of the most rewarding relationships you can ever have.  But as with anything that is worth having, it requires work.  Two imperfect souls intertwined to become one.  (Genesis 2:24)

There are good days. There are not so good days.  There are seasons that the ebb and flow of the relationship may seem like the flow has been overtaken by the ebb.  But despite any circumstance, when Christ is in the center of this beautiful covenant, anything can be overcome.

Job loss, infertility, death of a family member, infidelity, illness.  These are only some of the circumstances that a husband and wife may face in their union.  Are you experiencing any of these? Perhaps you have something to add to this list.  Whatever it is, God can and will help.  We need only to ask Him and believe that He will graciously give it to us. (Mark 11:24)

Prayer

Father God, thank You for my husband.  Thank You for showing us what unconditional love looks like and for forgiving us when we least deserve it.  Lord, help me to see my husband with your eyes.  Help us to love one another with your heart and the same faithfulness that reaches the clouds.  Help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.  Keep our hearts from being hardened so that we do not fall into troubled territory. Father God, help me to submit to my husband who is the head of our home.  And as I respectfully submit to him, may he also submit to You, Lord.  May he learn to love me as You have called him to do, which is to love me as his own body.  We need your Holy Spirit to fall fresh on our marriage as we battle [insert marriage need].  May we continually encourage one another, building each other up.  And help us to not be overcome by this warfare and recognize who the real enemy is.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Psalms 36:5; James 1:19; Proverbs 28:14; Ephesians 5:22-25,28,33; 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Prayer for Employment Breakthrough

My first job was as a hostess at a newly opened restaurant.  I was 16 years old.  I was not required to work, but I had the desire to work and make my own money.  Now, 25 plus years later I can recall the number of different jobs that I’ve been fortunate enough to have.  I didn’t like all of them, but I realize that each job blessed me in more ways than the obvious.

With each job for which I have applied, particularly in my adult life, I have sought God to give me the one that He feels is best.  There have been various reasons I have prayed to God regarding my employment.  I have prayed for promotion, higher pay, relief from discord, and even prayed to find work closer to home.  Yet still there are many people who are praying simply to have a place of employment in general.

Whether you are currently employed or looking for work it is vital that we seek God first.  Then we must trust Him, knowing that He will deliver the right job at the right time.

Prayer

Father God, I know that the heavens and the earth all belong to You.  You and only You founded the fullness of the world and everything in it.  Because of your greatness, I am confident that You will give to me what I need and at the right time.  While I wait on my employment circumstance to change, I will meditate on Matthew 6:34 which tells us that we need not worry about what tomorrow will bring, for today has enough trouble of its own.  So Lord, help me to remain in your Spirit as I keep my eyes stayed on You.  I thank You in advance for the work You entrust to me, for I will do it with all of my heart for You and You alone.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Psalm 89:11; Psalm 121:1; Matthew 6:34; Colossians 3:23

Prayer for Spiritual Breakthrough

In the world we live in it is easy to fall prey to the tactics of the enemy.  Satan is the father of all lies.  I once read that his job is first to get us to believe the lies he is telling us.  And once we believe the lies, it is then, that we carry out his sinful will.  I couldn’t agree more.

If we aren’t diligently intentional on filling our minds with, and meditating on, the Word of God, Satan will have his way with us.

Betrayal, rejection, and abandonment are very painful.  I have endured them all.  With each pain, I wrestled greatly to not allow my flesh to control my response.  But I must admit that sometimes I allowed my flesh to win.

Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 that the battles we face are not physical but instead are spiritual.  And although, we know that the battle is the Lord’s (2 Chronicles 20:15), we still must do our part.  We must pray and put on the whole armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

Prayer

Father God, thank You for providing us with Your weapons of warfare as we face our daily battles.  The enemy is out to steal, kill, and destroy us with his fiery darts.  Lord, help us to take up each weapon and use it just as You instruct.  As we suit up in Your armor as a soldier under Your command, help us to take every thought captive and bring it into complete obedience to You.  Father God, may we not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the daily renewing of our mind. Help us to break free of any spiritual strongholds keeping us in bondage.   And help us to discern what is your good, acceptable, and perfect will.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

John 10:10; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Romans 12:2

Prayer for Deliverance and Breakthrough

Breakthrough and deliverance are partners in the victory over our spiritual battles. Unfortunately, they don’t always occur at the same time.   Sometimes God will give us a breakthrough to give us the hope and endurance to keep going as we wait for His deliverance.

I encourage you to store up every breakthrough, both big and small.  Each breakthrough is a gift.  Consider them as stones given to us from God to build upon our faith.  Our precious Savior Jesus Christ is the cornerstone on which we can put each one of those stones until the enemy is defeated.

…therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Isaiah 28:16

Prayer

Lord God, we come before You in need of a breakthrough and deliverance from [insert need].  Father God, your Word tells us that You are not slow in coming through on your promise, but instead, You are patiently waiting for us to come to repentance.  You also promise us that although weeping endureth for a night, we are sure to see joy in the morning.  Protect us, Lord, and shield us with your favour as we hold steadfast to You.  We bind up all attacks of the enemy and loose any strongholds that may already have us in bondage.  Surround us with other believers who are strong in their faith and who will lift us up as we run the race set before us.  We thank You that when we walk uprightly that You promise to not withhold anything good from us.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Psalm 5:12; Psalm 30:5; Psalm 84:11

I pray that you are encouraged by these prayers. Remember that although God is omniscient, He desires that we talk to Him regularly through prayer. He wants us to acknowledge that we know He is in full control.  It does not matter the size or timing of our need, He will deliver.  We need only to pray in His will.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

1 John 5:14-15
