People Need the Lord—the Wisdom of Winning Souls

On Sunday evening, October 1, 2017, another mass shooting stunned our nation.  A lone gunman rained gunfire down on the crowd of thousands at the Jason Aldean concert in Las Vegas, cruelly taking the lives of at least 59 people and wounding many hundreds more.

Such horror and madness is so hard to comprehend.

This past week we read Proverbs 10-12 in which this verse, Proverbs 11:30, is found—

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

As I think on the tragic loss of life on that Sunday night, the sadness and grief and trauma so many are living through right now…and that will be with them throughout their lives…I am struck anew with the truth that…

We who are believers must be about the business of winning souls to Christ!

It is the wise thing to do.  For three reasons—

First, it is wise to love and care about what Jesus loves and cares about…the souls of men who are headed to an eternity in hell.

Jesus “came to seek and to save that which was lost” …the souls of men.  (Luke 19:10)  Because He knows that—

He that believeth on him [Jesus] is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  John 3:18

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.  Revelation 21:8

Until a person hears and believes the gospel—that Jesus died to pay for their sins for them and rose again from the dead the third day—he/she is living as if suspended by a thread above the fires of hell…condemned alreadyIf nothing else could move us to get busy, that thought, that truth, should.

For me personally, if I would just force myself to stop and dwell on that thought, really visualize that horror, for just a few minutes each morning, then maybe I’d be more faithful to give gospel tracts that day.  And look for opportunities to share my testimony and the gospel message with others each day.

How many times have I ignored those opportunities God has tried to show me?  And shown my lack of wisdom?  For “he that winneth souls is wise.”  As well as, my lack of love and compassion?  (Jude 1:22-23)

Have you been guilty of doing that, too?

Second, it is wise to seek to win souls because it is always wise to obey God’s commands to us.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  Mark 16:15

God has chosen to use people to reach people.  It is our responsibility to use all the resources and abilities we have to reach the lost all around us with the truth of God’s love for them in sending His Son Jesus to take the punishment of their sins for them.

If we don’t tell them, how will they know? How will they escape the torment of the eternal hell?

The answer…They won’t!

Have you told anyone today?

Third, it is wise to seek to win the lost to Jesus because time is running out.

None of us is promised the next day, the next heartbeat.  But most of us live as though this life is all there is.  Or, that we will live for hundreds of years.  We think, no need to rush to live for Jesus.  Right?  Plenty of time.

That thought just keeps us blinded to what is really important in this life—living for eternity.

Every.  Day.

Living this life with an eternal perspective…focusing on those things that will matter hundreds of years, and even millennia, from now.

And what will matter for all eternity is the answer to this question…

Is anyone in heaven because of me?

How about you?  Will anyone be in heaven because you loved Jesus and that person enough to tell them the way of forgiveness for their sins and salvation from hell?

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.  Psalm 90:12

Time is running out…for the lost, as well as, for us who know Jesus as our Saviour.

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.  John 9:4

May we each possess the sense of urgency that Jesus had.  The urgency to do the work God has for each of us…the work of spreading the gospel message near and far.

From the hymn, “Set My Soul Afire” by Gene Bartlett—

Set my soul afire, Lord, set my soul afire,

Make my life a witness of Thy saving pow’r.

Millions grope in darkness, waiting for Thy Word,

Set my soul afire, Lord, Set my soul afire.

Gene Bartlett

My Prayer

Father, evermore make me a winner of souls!  “Set my soul afire, Lord.”  Forgive me the times I’ve been complacent and taken my eyes and mind off the terrible urgency of winning souls from the fires of hell before it is forever too late for them.  Oh, God, use me!  Evermore make me a vessel unto honour that You can use!  For…people need the Lord.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

Dear reader, are you saved?  Are you 100% sure that when you die, you will enter heaven?

If so, what are you doing to help others be saved and know this, too?  Please share in the Comments below.  You may help someone else who needs some ideas.

If you answered those first two questions with anything other than “YES!” …such as “I hope so.” Or “Maybe.”  Or “I’m trying.”  Or “No.”—wouldn’t you want to be 100% sure that when you die, you would not wake up in hell but in heaven?

The Bible says you can be sure!  And I’d love to tell you how.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may knowthat ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  1 John 5:13

Did you click to find out?  What if this is your last chance to find out?  Don’t hesitate.  Just as those who died at that concert had no idea they wouldn’t be going home, we have no idea when our last moment on earth will be.

…behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2b
